Samsung SGH-T559 Comeback 3G messaging phone review

The Samsung SGH-T559 Comeback, from T-Mobile, is one of a new crowd of phones that feature both a standard numeric keypad and a hidden QWERTY keyboard for more convenient text input in messaging and email. The comeback supports T-Mobile's 3G network, but does it really signify a return of dual-keyboard phones?

Physical Aspects

The Samsung SGH-T559 Comeback, at first glance, appears to be a rather large basic candybar shaped cell phone, with a small, low-resolution display and regular keypad. However, the top part of this phone opens to the side to reveal a large landscape-oriented display and full QWERTY keyboard, with an additional set of navigational keys. The phone isn't small, measuring in at 109.2mm x 55.6mm x 17.8mm (4.3in x 2.2in x 0.7in), and is somewhat hefty, at 127.6g (4.5oz). The phone is clad in a pearl-white plastic casing, with soft-touch purple or red accents.

The Comeback is, unfortunately, built rather cheaply. The white plastic feels extremely thin, and this is confirmed when you remove the frail back panel of the phone to access the battery. The hinge is also rather flimsy, with plenty of movement past the initial stopping point. The phone does feel rather nice in the hand, but is large and does not fit into a normal pocket easily. The plastic exterior also creaks slightly when in use.

On the front of the Samsung SGH-T559 Comeback you'll find the small 1.5-inch OLED display, which is bright, although extremely low resolution (128 x 128 pixels). Below this is the navigational key cluster. The 5-way d-pad is easy to use, with a prominent 'OK' key in the center and well-defined directions. To the left of the d-pad is a large button, the top of which is the left softkey, and the bottom the 'send' button. The dedicated camera key is positioned in between these, slightly offset to the left. On the other side of the d-pad is a similar setup, this time with the right softkey, end key, and an offset 'back' key. Below this is the chiclet-style numeric keypad. Fortunately, these keys are raised and separated, with superb tactile feedback.

Along the left edge of the phone you'll find the volume rocker, as well as the proprietary port that handles charging and audio headsets. Fortunately, Samsung saw fit to include a stereo headset in the packaging, which is appreciated. The 2 megapixel camera is located on the back of the phone, in the top left corner, with the speakerphone grille found nearby.

When you open the Samsung SGH-T559 Comeback, you'll be pleased to discover the large, bright 2.5-inch WQVGA (400 x 240 pixel) resolution display inside the top part of the phone. There are 2 softkeys positioned on the barrel of the hinge, though these are oddly squished to the middle, so that they do not line up properly with the on-screen labels. The QWERTY keyboard is located on the bottom part of the inside of the phone and consists of four rows of tall, skinny buttons, each with two characters (main and 'ALT'). On our device these buttons are deep purple, with white main labels and light orange 'ALT' characters. The secondary navigational cluster is positioned to the right of the keyboard, with a 5-way d-pad in the middle, surrounded by a dedicated messaging button, camera button, and send/end keys. There is also a back key, awkwardly offset between the send/end keys.

Unfortunately, this internal QWERTY keyboard is incredibly cramped, thanks to the tall skinny design of the buttons. As a result, it is a complete disaster to type on and I was constantly having to go back to correct things. The keys have nice tactile feedback and are not mushy, but are simply too close together to really use at a decent speed.

Beneath the frail back cover is the 960mAh battery, and beneath that is the SIM card slot. The microSD card slot is frustratingly located under the battery as well, so you must remove the battery in order to access the memory card.
